Using Sustainability as an Enabler in a Rapidly Changing Environment

Situation

The progressive culture at a large Entertainment company had led to a significant amount of grass-roots sustainability activity. However, these efforts were mostly bottom-up, lacking visible senior leadership and integration with the business. The Company asked Blu Skye to assist in launching a company-wide sustainability strategy; integrating sustainability into the business; developing metrics and targets to drive progress and accountability; and communicating success stories in a manner that inspired employee engagement.

Insights

Research and analysis indicated that the entertainment industry was facing fundamental change where the old business model had run its course. The Company needed a new winning business model for the changing environment, but while developing the new model, it was imperative to shape the culture and become more efficient to survive the transition period. Identifying and tangibly quantifying the opportunities to drive business value was pivotal to facilitating change. The sustainability strategy was aimed at accomplishing exactly that.

Results

The Sustainability Strategy took an integrated approach to addressing the challenge at hand. A footprint reduction model was developed as a dynamic tool for target setting and identifying high leverage innovation opportunities. An innovation approach was recommended that would enable them to use sustainability to drive fundamental change and establish cost targets that were 5 to 10 times their initial targets. Progress could be tracked through monitoring leading indicators on a management dashboard, ensuring accountability per division. In addition, a communication and engagement plan was developed to engage senior leaders and align the sustainability brand with a winning culture. Blu Skye’s approach helped provide the lens, strategy and tools to identify and tackle strategic priorities, while framing the changes in a positive light for employees.
