Pioneering a Sustainable Harvest Strategy Situation California is blessed with a premier wine industry and a globally significant reservoir of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. Ironically, while the resilience of these two great Californian assets is interconnected, they are often found competing for their survival, especially in the North and Central Coast regions. One of the world’s most renowned conservation organizations was seeking innovative strategies to partner with the wine industry to increase their overall conservation impact. Blu Skye was engaged to assist the organization with industry outreach and strategy development.Insights Research and interviews with industry leaders made it strikingly evident that both the industry and conservation body were committed to habitat conservation but were approaching it from different corners. Finding common ground through the co-creation and implementation of an innovative, industry-wide conservation strategy could have an amplified effect on preserving the stability of the natural habitat surrounding vineyards. The strategy would include: • Informing the science behind current vineyard best management practices • Strategically intervening in the next wave of conversion within the industry • Pioneering innovative set-aside strategies that entice landowners to formally conserve land. Results The Blu Skye team drafted a strategy for the conservation body and facilitated the internal and industry enrollment to launch the initiative. Once implemented, this approach has the potential to set new standards for habitat conservation within an agricultural sector that could expand into other sectors. |
